Investigational studies in breathing performance enhancement in the Human Performance Laboratory of Springfield College

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

The best measure of cardiorespiratory endurance and aerobic fitness is generally considered to be VO2 MAX, or the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise. It is computed as “milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight”. In theory, the greater the VO2 MAX during maximal exercise the more adenosine triphosphate energy is produced for endurance muscle performance. VO2 reaches a “maximum” level in a linear relationship with increasing exercise intensity, and it then plateaus, even if the exercise intensity continues to increase. Exercising to, or beyond, VO2 MAX requires exceptional effort and can only be sustained for a brief period of time. Although genetics and body size impact VO2 MAX, extensive research has shown that aerobic training can increase VO2 MAX. Athletes choosing to maximize their aerobic or cardiovascular conditioning, in order to push beyond performance-limiting pain points, undertake extensive training to increase their VO2 MAX. Training methods for improving VO2 MAX abound. However, there is little published research that considers if improving nasal airflow in athletes can increase VO2 MAX. During the past two years, two preliminary investigational clinical studies to test the effect of a new breathing enhancement device, MAX-AIR NOSE CONES® SPORT, on VO2 MAX were conducted in the Human Performance Laboratory at Springfield College.

METHODS:

Utilizing the BRUCE protocol to determine VO2 MAX in STUDY I, 10 male college students (age 22 ± 3.1 yrs., BMI 28.3 ± 6.1 kg/m2) were tested to determine if any improvement in VO2 MAX was possible using a device with no additional training or conditioning. In STUDY II, 27 Division III varsity athletes (age 19.5 ± 1.2 yrs., BMI 26.1 ±2.7 kg/m2), whose VO2 MAX, in theory, should be more difficult to affect, were tested. The athletes who participated were current members of the Springfield College Varsity Football, Track & Field, Baseball, Basketball and Lacrosse teams. Study subjects had no reported complaint of nasal breathing difficulties. They were given a preliminary session in which they were fitted with the appropriately sized NOSE CONES® and practiced wearing them during exercise. Prior to exercise testing, resting peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) rates were assessed by the In-Check Nasal flow meter, with and without the NOSE CONES®. Subjects then completed two VO2 MAX tests, in random, counterbalanced order, using a calibrated computerized metabolic system (Max II, Physiodyne, Quogue, NY). One session was completed while wearing the NOSE CONES® (NC) and the other was completed without, the control (C).

RESULTS:

The results of STUDY I were positive and demonstrated in a small subject group that the MAX-AIR NOSE CONES® SPORT device may improve VO2 MAX. A second larger study, STUDY II, was undertaken to further test the device in an athletic sample. In STUDY II, 63% of the athletes showed improvement (8.2%) in VO2 MAX scores while wearing the NOSE CONES®, and the total group showed an improvement of 2.8% (59.6 ± 8.0 NC vs, 58.7 ± 10.3 C). The PNIF (L/min) of the 63% of the participants in STUDY II who showed improvement in their VO2 MAX score was also significantly higher by 14.5% , and the total group showed an improvement of 11.7%, while wearing the NOSE CONES® (180.4 ± 56.7 NC vs 161.5 ± 50.7 C) p < 0.05. Additional pulmonary ventilatory performance scores recorded during STUDY II testing sessions indicated higher pulmonary ventilation performance when the participants wore the nose cones, as well.

CONCLUSIONS:

Based upon these preliminary investigational studies, approximately 63% of the athletes without preexisting nasal complaints wearing the MAX-AIR NOSE CONES®SPORT experienced improvement (8.2%) in their VO2 MAX, or their ability to use oxygen during peak exercise, without additional training or conditioning. Our results from these two preliminary studies may indicate that the use of MAX-AIR NOSE CONES® SPORT may lead to improved performances in activities that are dependent upon the oxygen transport system. Further studies are warranted to substantiate these preliminary findings.

    These certainly open my nasal airway and are comfortable enough during sleep. I wouldn’t wear them out in public, since they are bright yellow and have the tab showing outside my nose. Also, these enlarge my nose to be more bulbous, hence, I’ll only wear them at home.

Still experimenting with available styles and different sizes as occasionally device is out of place upon awakening. Device always maintains position when worn during normal activities.     Purchased 2 pair. They did not work for me; They kept sliding out. Returned both pairs for nose cones and sinus cones. If you have a lot of discharge these will likely not work for you.

      Hi Thank you for your review. Actually the opposite is true. If you have a lot of nasal discharge, it is due to nasal airway obstruction. Obstruction causes congestion to build in the airway and discharge through the front of your nose, instead of draining correctly through the back of your throat. The Nose Cones relieve nasal airway obstruction to reduce congestion build-up and improve natural drainage. If you have congestion buildup in your airways, then you will have drainage through the front of your nose when you first get started. This is to be expected and healthy. You may need to remove the Nose Cones and blow your nose a couple of times before the drainage normalizes and passes through the throat. After clearing your nose in this manner and reinserting the Nose Cones, you may be amazed at your nasal breathing performance. Give us a call for assistance.

    The Sinus Cones work well for me and I would definitely recommend them! This is my first pair and after using them for several months, I’ve found them to be effective, comfortable and reasonably durable. For me, the Cones are best utilized as an adjunct for those times when nasal strips won’t stay affixed, or for times when I can’t wear them for cosmetic reasons or because my facial skin has gotten irritated from extended strip-wearing. The Cones are great because you can simply pop them in or out, as needed.

    I’m an active man in my early 40s with a collapsed left nostril and a deviated septum. I can’t get used to mouth-breathing and the nasal obstruction causes considerable dyspepsia upon exertion when running or weightlifting. Most times, an adhesive nasal strip works well enough. However, I live in Georgia (USA) and it is pretty hot here for much of the year which means nasal strips fall off fairly quickly once I start sweating. After searching extensively for an alternative, I came across Max Air Sinus Cones and chose to order them because of the softer material. I’m glad I did; these have largely solved my problems! The Cones fit snugly, but I have had them occasionally pop out under extremely heavy exertion (e.g., doing pull ups or sprinting). Otherwise, they stay in well and I quickly forget they’re even there.

    I have suffered with sinus for over sixty years, using antibiotics, allergy, experts nothing helped, I mean nothing. I saw ad on line about Max Air Cones I thought why not I am seventy-seven what do I have to lose, guess what after a little adjustment with these cones my breathing issues at night are GONE and I mean GONE!!!!! Why didn’t my doctor suggest these cones I am more than a little upset at all those so called experts but over joyed with this product cant thank you enough!!!!!!!!

    superb fit; they never move, even with vigorous exercise. I also wear them to sleep. It was surgery or this. And the Maxi cones are gradually opening up my airways. Recommend trying the different sizes until you find the best fit for you. I love the solidity of this material; that’s what keeps the airway open. I can’t imagine living without them. It’s astonishiing to wake up in the morning afer a full, restful night’s sleep and fully oxygenated! A plus!

    I just received the Max-Air Nose Cones Sports and they are extremely hard and uncomfortable. i already have used Max Air Nose Cones in the past, but this ones are made of hard plastic, even scratch my nose. i was hoping they feel the same as the one i have. i believe this are not worth to but, also don’t fit right in the side of the nostril, don’t hold up well, they slide all the time. i should have buy again the nose cones, i regret to buy the performance ones. i bought size small, maybe a extra small would have fit better but still the material is not soft, so … (stellezsantana@gmail.com)

    I started off with the regular Max-Air Nose Cones on the recommendation of the dentist who fitted me with a sleep apnea mouth appliance. The appliance wasn’t quite enough by itself so we added the Nose Cones. It helped stop the snoring and sleep apnea events. However, I was having issues with them staying in my nose. I contacted customer service and they recommended the Max-Air Sport. These stay in my nose much better until they have been worn a couple of months. which is about when it is recommended to change them. Easy to clean, easy to store, easy to take on a trip.

    This is an excellent company. If you add up all the sizes and squishiness levels of their nose inserts, there are 13 different products. Their website and literature give you guidance on how to select a size.

    But I had an oddball issue – I had septoplasty at one time, and I had trouble finding the right size cone that would hold my nose open without either falling out or being uncomfortable. I tried several on my own, then called customer service.

    Fortunately their customer service is spectacular – it took two separate calls and a couple of exchanges, but the knowledgeable and sympathetic agents were finally successful in recommending a product that worked just right. It has pretty much revolutionized my sleep, or at least has been very helpful in allowing me to sleep through the night. I even wear them during the day sometimes.

    This nasal cone has been a life saver. Diagnosed with cancer, I had a portion of my nose removed and hence major reconstructive surgery. During the healing process, my nose was constricting and air flow was becoming non-existent.     All the cones I’ve bought are comfortable and do open my collapsed nasal passage, but I have to secure them to my nose/face with medical cloth tape every day & night. Neither in the original pair nor a single one stay in more than a few seconds/minutes. I’ve found much cheaper plastic ones that have a small loop that slides in when I insert them. I can sneeze, talk, cough and eat without them falling out. Design flaw and high price.

    I purchased the nose cones and wore them for one day. I think that I bought one size too large as the cones kept pushing out. I was going to send them back for a pair of smaller size, but my dogs chewed them.
    The left side of my face is paralyzed and has slipped forward closing my nasal passage on that side. I also cannot feel, so I could not feel the cone fall out for the dog to chew. Twice. Cones are also enormously overpriced.
